The history of the museum

TAT_8386

The history of the museum: The founding history of the house-museum. Teryan’s house-museum is one of the vital witnesses and treasures of the Armenian people’s culture and history. It is important not only as the paternal house of the poet, but also as a cultural center of regional and national significance for the previous two centuries.

Vahan Teryan’s paternal house was built in 1882. The well-kept house consisting of several rooms and wooden floors has welcomed a number of prominent people who visited Gandza. Since 1955, the active youth, led by Maulik Sedrakyan, appealed to the Supreme Council of the USSR to turn Vahan Teryan’s house into a museum. The novelist-translator Sahak Manvelyan arrived in Gandza by the order of the Central Committee of Georgia, then he got acquainted with the house and the area, and a year later everyone’s dream came true. Moreover, in 1957 a library was opened there.

Teryan’s sister’s daughter, Arusyak Malkhasyan, was appointed the first director, who was later replaced by Sergey Hasratyan, a graduate of Yerevan’s Khachatur Abovyan Pedagogical Institute. The house-museum’s collection enriched through his efforts and new active cooperation relations were created. After him, the directors were Vagharshak Tangamyan – from 1976, Vaghinak Ghazaryan – from 1998, Artem Torosyan – from 2002, then Vagharshak Tangamyan again. Mher Abgaryan has been the director of the museum since 2022.

At the beginning of the 1970s, the foundation of a new building was laid in the yard of the house-museum to keep the exhibits more safely. n 2019, the “Support to Javakhketi” Foundation undertook the restoration of the exhibition hall, which was already in a deplorable state.

2019 թվականին «Ջավախքին աջակցություն» հիմնադրամը(ՋԱՀ) նախաձեռնեց վերականգնել ցուցասրահը, որը արդեն գտնվում էր անմխիթար վիճակում։

Even in the conditions of a pandemic and war, the Foundation was able to implement the first stage of the project, as a result of which, thanks to persistent and consistent work, the exhibition hall of the Vahan House Museum was restored Teryan, and on August 1, 2021, the opening ceremony took place with great solemnity. And now preparations are underway to restore the memorial part of the house-museum, my father’s house.”
